London Underground

A guide for visitors about announcements you may hear on London’s Underground or as Londoners call it ‘The Tube’

“Mind the Gap” – can be heard at stations that have curved platform edges, this results in a gap between the train and the platform. Hence, ‘mind the gap’ means watch that you don’t accidently put your foot down the gap when getting off the train.

Bank [Central Line] and Waterloo [Bakerloo line] if you want to hear it. Tube drivers will tell you that the female announcer is nicknamed Sonya, because she ‘gets on ya nerves’, but her real name is Emma Clarke.

“Stand behind the yellow line” - keep on the platform side of the yellow line.

“Passengers are advised to carry a bottle of water in this hot weather” – research has shown this has little effect, you are better off just drinking it.

“This train terminates here” - just an idle threat, but it’s best to get off anyway.

“There is a good service on all lines” – there are trains moving somewhere but maybe just not the one you’ve been waiting 20 minutes for.

“Trains are subject to delays due to an incident at …”- usually means some person has stood behind the yellow line and been crushed by a train or been decapitated while trying to retrieve their umbrella from ‘the gap’.
